Goldstream Park Salmon Run - Victoria B.C

It’s time to head back to the river. Each year around this time, the Salmon return to their spawning grounds. It is an absolute marvel of nature and the cycle of life.

It’s been a couple of years since I’ve been back for the annual salmon run, and will be heading back this weekend for a return visit. I think the one thing that I find incredible is this opportunity to watch the evolution of this life cycle in real time. Over the next couple of months, the salmon set out on an almost unbelievable journey. A journey of no return but full of purpose. From the ocean, the salmon will return to the exact spot in which their life began. It seems impossible, but true. Only a few survive, but for those that do, the task of laying and fertilizing eggs begin and the salmon will then slowly die. Is this where it ends? No. The cycle continues when the Eagles and Gulls move in to feast. It is a photographers jackpot. It is an educational experience for the many school children who travel just west of Victoria’s western communities to visit the small but richly inhabited park known as Goldstream.

I have included a picture from my last visit that sort of illustrates the beauty of nature, the realities of evolution and the beginning of new life. Even outside of the salmon run, Goldstream Park is worth a visit to experience it’s lush rain forest environment, old growth trees and shear tranquility of the great outdoors.
